Taking the environment seriously

eatlunch joined other like-minded Hertfordshire companies to learn how to develop their own Environmental Management System for ISO 14001, a recognised standard for environmental procedures.

The course highlighted skills to implement environmental practices into their businesses. A series of sessions came to end this December after 6 months study and class workshops.

Taking part in the training were Day & Night PAT Testing, BJ Builders, GTS Ventilation and eatlunch. Also in the photograph are Antony Gough, Programme Manager for Resource Efficiency East and Paul Burr of WYG who delivered the training.

Fueling the Ocado Charity Quiz Night

eatlunch was pleased to help one of our regular Customers, Ocado with some buffet food to help fuel them at their Charity Quiz Night.

We are thrilled to hear that the amount raised on the evening for Macmillan through this event was £1267.06!!!

What Ocado said:
"Thank you so very much from me and the whole Ocado Charity team for your support and immense generosity in providing the quiz with such a generous amount of food. Without your support we would not have been able to raise this figure for Macmillan and your contribution is wholly appreciated by all.

Also, I would like to add that working with you on this quiz night was a complete pleasure. You made everything look so easy, although I am sure a lot of hard work went on in the background to make everything happen to precision.

With kind regards and a big THANK YOU!

'Well-Being in the Workplace' Seminars

An “Appetiser” Workshop with Kimberley Hare at The Hertfordshire Lifestyle & Indulgence Festival 2011.

This unique event is being run in conjunction with the “Lifestyle & Indulgence Festival” at the Business Technology Centre Stevenage on Friday 21st October 2011

Here’s what you’ll take away from this short, energising and interactive session:

> How the way you THINK is just as important - perhaps more important - to your well-being as to what you eat or how you use your body.

> Simple strategies and tools you can apply immediately in your personal life, and your business, to make well-being and Happy High Performance a habit and a culture.

Imagine a scale of 1-10 where:

1 = exhausted, stressed, overwhelmed, or just low energy and bored.

10 = ALIVE, energized and engaged!

In Kimberley’s experience, many people in organisations spend most of their time living at around 2 - 5. And yet, one of the most important things determining how successful you’ll be at anything is your emotional state at that moment...

In the end, the quality of your LIFE comes down to the quality of your day-to-day experience-and the quality of your experience is determined by the emotional states you live in.

This short appetiser session will explore some of the recent findings from research and offer practical strategies you can apply immediately to live more of your life at a 10 AND to create a culture of Happy High Performance in your business.

This is a ‘not-to-be-missed’ opportunity to find out how you, your family and your business can benefit from cutting-edge findings from Neuroscience BOOK NOW!

Limited places are available for each seminar at just £12.50 plus VAT each.

There are two sessions available between 11.00am to 12.00 Noon and

Brain Friendly Food

Chances are you just about caught breakfast on the hoof this morning... or maybe you had time for a full fat cappuccino and a pastry from your favourite coffee shop - after the hassle of course in finding somewhere to park the car?

As for lunch, that will almost certainly consist of a sandwich and if the latest eating trends are to be believed, you are likely to be relying on a good deal of snacking throughout the day to keep your energy levels up. Many of us do not get to eat a proper meal until we finally sit down in a more relaxed environment at some stage at the end of the day and with modern technologies such as Blackberries and I Phones, it’s all too easy to never switch off from work and business commitments?!

When we do get to relax and unwind from the stresses of our work, home and family life, the food we all seek can often be used as a “comfort” factor and indeed many of us have a reliance on that “large glass of wine” to help the process along as we crave to ease our tensions and fall all too often towards sleepless nights, with thoughts and anxiety turning over the never ending list of things to do in our non-stop lives.

If this sounds like you, then don’t worry you are definitely not alone.

Current consumer trends would indicate that many of us don’t get to eat breakfast at all, rather we rely on snacks and convenience foods that have poor calorific value and are unable to support our energy needs, often leaving us unable to perform work tasks at our best and adding to other stress triggers in our lives.

To help combat food stress, consider doing the following, balanced with weekly treats:

> Keep some mixed nuts and dried fruits in your work bag, office draw or car when travelling so as you can have one or two handfuls when hungry rather than fill up on confectionary or sugary snacks.

> Keep fresh seasonal fruits on your desk and encourage work colleagues to do the same, perhaps this is something that your work place would help sponsor?

> Plan and prepare your lunch at home in advance, using quality produce with variation, avoiding fatty or high salt content ingredients. (do ensure that this is kept refrigerated prior to eating).

> Avoid drinking Alcohol through the week and give yourself periods away from consumption of fast foods & takeaways.

Buy local... Think global

With memories of Wimbledon not far behind us (images of English teas and freshly picked strawberries), the eyes of the world have been on sporting events with every pub and supermarket tempting you with meal deals, big screen TV, and full to the rafters cases of cheap beer!

Now might be a good time to give a thought to exactly where our food comes from and how to ensure those “food miles” are as much a part of our sustainable way of living as turning down the thermostat or taking the opportunity to cycle or walk to the office on gloriously sun filled mornings.

The country and indeed the world face some massive challenges ahead when considering our future food security and inevitably as consumers we will be forced to change our lifestyles and adapt to the rising costs of our weekly shopping baskets and increasing shortages of basic food ingredients as countries and economies adapt to changes in the environment.

As a catering supplier of business buffet lunches for to a wide range of meetings and clients throughout the region, it is therefore critical to our success that we consider where our products are sourced from, how they are distributed and other issues such as packaging and our partners approach to the management of waste and their own environmental strategies.

"We have some great local partners from whom we can rely on some fantastic fresh seasonal produce at this time of year - and nearly all of it from in, or around our Hertfordshire borders” says Ian White of business caterers 'eatlunch'.

Regional and Seasonal Products to look out for:

> Strawberries
> Raspberries
> Baby Carrots
> Leeks
> Fennel
> Turnips
> Potatoes

"We have fresh produce delivered to our kitchens every morning from many of our carefully selected supplier partners, such as: www.fisherandwoods.co.uk "

25 years of catering excellence

eatpure founders Pam & Ian White first fell in love with food hospitality over 25 years ago by setting up their first retail food business - which included a novel home delivery service (long before the birth of online shopping!)

The 90’s saw our development into ala carte dining, by opening a restaurant within the world-famous Cowes Sailing Club on the Isle of Wight. This is also where General Manager, Peter Farquhar first joined us.

A food import and distribution business followed to launch a premium cake and biscuit brand into department stores and world leading brands such as Harvey Nichols, Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges.

This experience opened up many vital and long-standing relationships with suppliers and food professionals across the globe and allowed us to explore catering experiences and influences as wide ranging as food service in Australia and New Zealand, to supplying specialist catering to a “life skills” cafe and craft shop, which helps adults with learning difficulties to work in the community and develop more social interaction and communication.

The journey was crucial

The business has achieved many milestones over the past quarter of a century and has benefitted from many wonderful associations with customers, suppliers, staff and key individuals who have helped us on our journey as we have developed and grown. Thank you to you all.

The lessons learned and the experiences gained on our journey to where we are now, have moulded what it is that eatpure is and the things that we continually challenge ourselves to deliver. The ethos at eatpure is to feed our customers well with fresh, tasty food and to care for the people we work with by providing opportunities for those who step up and enhance the journey!

Community responsibility has always been at the heart of the company’s philosophy and is reflected in our constant drive towards more sustainable business practices and our focus to reduce our environmental impact. eatpure continues to support local initiatives such as the Stevenage Community Trust and a number of charitable and fund-raising events throughout the calendar.

A little love for your tummy

Today eatpure ltd. delivers tasty food and beverages for events and businesses across Hertfordshire and the surrounding area. We work with quality suppliers, to source the finest ingredients (many of them from local growers and producers) to use in our  custom-fitted kitchens, where our wonderful team work to produce their yum, yum magic!

Making Social Responsibility a Business Advantage

We all know it’s been a tough year for most small business owners… keeping and winning new customers, reducing overhead costs, maintaining profit margins without dropping quality or service… the list is both endless and often daunting, especially when considered against a backdrop of increasing statutory and regulatory requirements.

As an SME, it's often difficult to understand how we can balance these critical operational tasks whilst facing head-on the very real challenges of a market driven “green agenda”. Whilst it may be true that marketing opportunities do exist to leverage brand through a commitment to the environment, most small organisations are at the very beginning of their quest in starting to consider the impact of their commercial activities in the community in which they live and work.

“Sustainability, Carbon Footprint, Travel Plans, Waste Reduction, Energy Consumption, Green House Gasses,” For most of us this list can also be overwhelming part of today’s “business mix” and whilst much expertise is on hand via regional groups such as Environmental Population and national resources such as the Carbon Trust and The Environment Agency knowing where to start with practical, informed solutions that can deliver meaningful and measurable benefits to your business and community, needs perhaps to go beyond our individual perceptions and to consider the bigger picture of changing work places as well as environments… how do we go beyond switching off unwanted lights?, cycling to work or recycling office waste, albeit great ways in themselves to make a small contribution to a global problem?

At “eatpure” we have been wrestling with these issues for some time now… how to change our culture… how to effect change and make a difference across our business, that in turn will make a difference to our customers and in the end combined with everyone else’s contribution may make a
whole lot of difference to the welfare of our environment?

We have talked to other small business owners, listened to our clients about their needs and gleaned valuable information from our local partners such as Environmental Population. From this we have set some simple, yet we hope realistic policies and targets to help drive our environmental management systems and as with any good business model, it ends up being in the detail “planning the work and working the plan” understand what you want from your policies and what it needs to deliver back to the business, so as it becomes another process and another management tool.

Tastier lunches for healthier business meetings

Wednesday 11 May 2011

Food waste... not just a load of rubbish

With an aging population, vast amounts of edible retail food products going to landfill and a sharp increase in obesity  rates-through higher individual food consumption of processed foods, (with all of their resulting health issues), it is no wonder that food security in the UK represents a very real long term threat to the stability of our economy.

When going out to client meetings, business presentations or even networking events, where catering may be provided,  it is worth giving a thought to the quality, freshness and seasonality of the produce and in particular where it is sourced.

You may at some stage have organised business catering for yourself...how many times have you thrown away a turned up sandwich, juggled with limp quiche or even worse not bothered to try anything from the uninviting selections thrown together in front of you?

Is price the only consideration or do you weigh up other critical factors in making sure that your clients, guests or colleagues feel replete and satisfied at the end of what is normally a busy working lunch period so how do you know what you are going to receive is going to be any good?

Given the demands for greater transparency and environmental responsibilities to reducing waste and the carbon foot print, how do you know that the company supplying you will have the right approach to social, corporate and community responsibilities?

If you or one of your colleagues is responsible for the purchasing of catering services delivered to your workplace or you want to influence the decision making process with the client catering that you are experiencing, then here are a few things to consider that will not only help the event go smoothly, but ensure that you have total peace of mind.

Policies & Procedures:

> Does the supplier publish and make available their working practices, do they actively promote healthier eating and work with local partners to reduce food miles.

> Do they have robust recycling schemes and a commitment to reducing waste to landfill?

Health & Safety:

> Is your supplier HACCP accredited or registered with the local EHO, do they follow stringent health & safety procedures e.g. does your food arrive in sign-written refrigerated vehicles?

> Are the drivers knowledgeable about the company and it’s products, are they proud to wear a company logo?

> Have you inspected their premises to ensure that foods are produced within a safe hygienic environment and prepared by qualified chefs who care about what they do?

Ease of Ordering:

> How easy is it to place your order, is the phone or fax always busy, can you order directly on line for example?

> Is the service provided, friendly, polite and efficient, do you receive confirmation that your requirements can be met and are you always offered flexibility and choice?

Quality, Presentation & Value for Money:

> Are the foods delivered freshly made and prepared from real ingredients and not the normal selection frozen and fried products purchased from large national wholesalers?

> Does the food arrive properly presented and wrapped, with clear labelling and information about contents?

> If ordering on a regular basis are you offered variety and can you mix and match from the available menus.

When choosing a new catering supplier-make sure you:
> Inspect premises.
> Meet staff and management teams... do they understand you and your business needs?
> Ask to look at health and safety manuals and certificates.
> Make sure they have an environmental policy and are acting upon it.
> Try samples and ask for evidence of credentials.
> Ask for references and recommendations.
> Ensure that the caterer is flexible.
> Set up a trading account.
> Enjoy the food!
> Give Feedback.

It appears that changes on the world stage and specifically those that are making us look at the social and more traditional values around the food that we eat are returning us to a simpler view on fresh ingredients, healthier eating, and more consideration for where our produce comes from and where it ends up.
